ONE WHITE GLOVE (from THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MEXICO)
In July 1968 the Second Mexican Revolution began. Although the first fruits of the Revolution would not appear for thirty-two years, there can be little doubt now that when the mayor of Mexico City sent the riot squad (granaderos) to stop a fight during a soccer game between a technical school and a preparatory school, the citizens of the Federal District began to take a more critical view of government. The granaderos broke up the fight, followed the students into the school building, and beat them. Then there was a student demonstration the in the center of the city that turned into a fight between police and students that lasted for days. Students burned buses, police beat students, and students were arrested and jailed. The confrontation had all the earmarks of student-police battles in Paris and San Francisco and New York. It was 1968.
For years, members of this community had wondered how our players would fare against teams in "open league" competition. Friday night, we got an answer. It's just one win but the first one is under our belt. We played against the OSS clan in the opening week of the R1 Tactical Realism League and won 9 to 1.
We only got to play 8 members and that was a disappointment to many as we had an excellent turn out of players. I was one that had to sit out but to be honest, if we are going to be competitive in an open league environment, we have to go with a solid game plan every week. Yes, everyone that is a part will be playing but there aren't enough spots on this one activity to be able to play everyone every week.
We have had some senior members waiting to get this league underway so we could start up an internal clan league. Frag, Desperate and Dead have indicated a desire to get something along those lines under way so stay tuned for further information as it becomes available. I know I am looking forward to it.
For tonight though, let's focus on what the team we fielded accomplished on bahalf of our community. Thanks guys and gals! Job well done. And to those who didn't get in the game tonight, thank you for your being there and ready to step up and fill any spots that may have been needed.
In the end, whether it's an open league like R1 or a closed league or tourney, the goal is the same - Have a good time and work together as a team for the win. Don't let anyone fool you - Nobody joins a server even for casual play with the idea of getting their butts handed to them although it does happen.
As long as it's kept in it's proper perspective, playing to win isn't bad - It's how you handle yourself that counts. We hope to add more wins in our open play and also look forward to our internal league play. We hope you'll join with us and have a good time. It's there for the taking.
